Home Health Care Insurance

One of the most popular forms of long-term care insurance coverage for retirees is home care only insurance. This is designed to help you pay the bills for eligible care in your home rather than in a nursing home. Since 5 out of 6 people receiving long-term care are receiving this care at home, it makes sense to evaluate this type of coverage.

Home health care insurance plans look very much like long-term care plans with the exception of nursing home coverage. They typically offer a daily benefit, have an elimination period, have an option for inflation protection and are underwritten (which means that you need to be in reasonably good health to apply).

Benefits under home health care policies begin when a plan of care documents the need for assistance with at least 2 “ADLs” – activities of daily living. The policies cover services provided by nurses, home health aides, therapists, nutritionists and a variety of others.

Home health care policies have a variety of ways of minimizing premium. For example, there are discounts for preferred health, spousal discounts, and discounts for group plans. There is also a savings for paying the premium annually.
